What Happens During Extraction

A ZIP file is a container. It holds one or more files, often compressed to reduce their total size. Extraction reverses this — the files inside are decompressed and placed back in their original form, ready to use. Folder structures inside the ZIP are preserved, so if the archive contained a folder of images, you get that folder with the images inside it.

The extraction process is fast for most files. Archives containing many small files sometimes take a moment longer than a single large file, because each file requires its own processing step.

ZIP files are common in many contexts. Software installers and plugins are often distributed as ZIP archives. Designers receive font packs and template collections in ZIP format. Developers download code repositories as ZIP exports from GitHub and similar platforms. Anyone who submits documents to a system that accepts "upload a folder" often needs to ZIP the folder first — and the recipient on the other end extracts it.

Compatibility

ZIP archives can be created on any operating system and extracted on any other. A ZIP created on Windows extracts normally on macOS or Linux, and vice versa.
